Many people back home are probably wondering what the security situation is like here. It's very mixed to say the least. The day before the 25th of January (which was the second anniversary of the start of the revolution) so the 24th of January, all of the Egyptians I knew were talking about going to the protests. One of my floor mates, an Egypyian named Michael, is a grad student here and is older than most other students by at least 5 or 6 years. He said the protests would be safe and he was definitely going to go, at least during the day. He said at night things get worse and that's when the police start tear gassing people. (this is true I've seen it on the news here on everyday there are protests. First they start out fine, then tensions rise and the police use water cannons and tear gas, and at night on the weekends with things are most heated people start throwing Molotov Cocktails.
Some people say not to go downtown because it's not safe when there are protests, but I've been going downtown quite a lot recently to go to dinner at restaurants there. They are cheaper and there's a larger variety of them down there.

I'm happy for a security update. Sounds like CSU during College Days 1985. Riots at Shields and Elizabeth. Long story. Should probably blog it, with the picture of the t-shirt proving I was there...
ReplyDeleteNot to make light of any political situation AT ALL, but when people gather looking for trouble, they usually find it, even if it's something as stupid as burning couches and throwing them off apartment balconies into crowds of people, for fun...
